Nestled in the serene landscapes of Kuala Langat, Fo Guang Shan Dong Zen Temple stands as a beacon of peace, culture, and spiritual education. This magnificent Buddhist temple complex serves as both a spiritual sanctuary and a cultural hub, attracting visitors from across Malaysia and beyond with its stunning architecture, peaceful atmosphere, and rich cultural programs.

The Meaning Behind the Name

The name “Dong Zen” carries profound significance in Chinese philosophy and Buddhist teachings. Literally translated, “Dong” means “East” and “Zen” means “The tranquil mind.” Together, the phrase represents “the tranquil mind in the east,” symbolizing the temple’s role as a Buddhist center serving the Southeast Asian region.

A Rich History of Growth

The temple’s journey began with the generosity of Madam Guo, a devoted follower of Fo Guang Shan (FGS), who donated the initial 2 acres of land for building a Buddhist temple in Malaysia. Through her continued efforts and assistance, neighboring landowners agreed to sell their properties to the temple, allowing the complex to expand to 16 acres.

The development ceremony was personally officiated by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the founder of Fo Guang Shan, on November 24, 1989. The temple was developed in 1995 and commenced operations in 1996. Today, the complex spans an impressive 22 acres, having created a significant avenue for tourism while serving as an important cultural and educational center.
